Personal trainers: what characterises them

Professional personal trainers are exercise specialists who adapt to the needs and starting point of their clients. Together, they define training goals and create customised training plans. Personal trainers coach sessions, motivate and support their clients in an in-person 1:1 setting so that the goals set can be achieved.

Whether the customised sessions take place outdoors, in a fitness centre, at the office or at home, personal trainers ensure that their clients train safely, effectively and with motivation.

Quality requirements for effective personal training are high. To meet them, personal trainers need a solid education and regular continuing education. Experience and in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, training theory and nutrition are part of every personal trainer’s profile. They know how to plan and structure training in cycles (periodisation) to progress consistently towards the goal.

Personal trainers also have strong interpersonal skills: they know how to communicate, build trust and encourage their clients at the right time.

The following aspects show how a qualified personal trainer differs from a non-professional trainer:

  • The personal trainer is a member of the SPTF, which sets quality standards.

  • Before training starts, the personal trainer carries out an assessment: they clarify goals and motivation and gather the information needed to obtain an accurate picture of health status and fitness level. This information is documented in writing.

  • The personal trainer has a current BLS/AED certification.

  • If self-employed, the personal trainer issues invoices for training sessions or provides a receipt for cash payments.

  • The self-employed personal trainer presents themselves professionally (e.g. website, business card, stationery, etc.).

This is what characterises a competent personal trainer:

  • They open up new horizons through varied training that is enjoyable and motivating.

  • They encourage and challenge, without pushing to total exhaustion.

  • They do far more than count steps on a treadmill: they coach and support clients on their way to their goal.

  • They adhere to the Code of Ethics: they are a trusted person and therefore discreet, punctual and careful when dealing with clients’ health.

  • They maintain a consistent client base.

  • They engage in regular continuing education.
